Finding a qualified company
In most purchases you can judge the work. Here you cannot — you will not be present, and by the time anything is visibly wrong the evidence has been disposed of.
Why this needs deliberate questions
You are usually being asked to decide on the worst day of your life. No ability to evaluate, no capacity to negotiate, high price, urgent framing — that combination is the precise set of conditions that produces overcharging. It does not mean the industry is dishonest. It means the ordinary protections a buyer relies on are absent, and you have to substitute questions for them.
The four things to verify
State registration, where your state requires it. In California it also decides whether your compensation claim is reimbursable.
Certification of the people actually attending — IICRC TCST, held by technicians rather than by companies.
The disposal chain — who hauls it, which permitted facility treats it, and whether they can show the documentation.
Insurance billing experience — whether they bill carriers directly and issue a Certificate of Treatment.
What a fair quote looks like
Itemised, with labour, materials, disposal, equipment and any reconstruction shown separately. In writing, before work begins. Explicit about what is not included, particularly the line between remediation and putting the room back. And written before anyone starts, not presented afterwards.
The one that matters most
An assignment of benefits or direction to pay hands the company your right to deal with your own insurer. There are legitimate reasons to sign one and it is often routine. Signing it on a doorstep, unread, on the day of a death is how families end up in a dispute they did not know they had entered.
You are allowed to say: I will read this and call you back in an hour. Any company worth hiring will say yes.
